The CARIBACT International Joint Laboratory and its partners URGéo (Faculty of Sciences of the State University of Haiti) and ERC2 (Quisqueya University) is glad to invite you to participate in the Geosciences 2021 conference in Haiti. The objectives of this scientific conference are to (1) present national and international research results with a focus on the Caribbean region in the broad disciplines of the geosciences: solid earth, ocean, atmosphere, climate; (2) enable Haitian and Caribbean researchers and students (masters and doctoral students) to present their research work; (3) stimulate exchanges and collaborations between participants from southern and northern countries. This conference will also be an opportunity to inaugurate CARIBACT, a 5-year program which aims to mobilize international cooperation for a better knowledge of natural hazards in the Caribbean in a spirit of exchanges and partnerships.
Dates: 9-10-11 November 2021.
Location: Karibe hotel (4-star), Pétionville/Juvénat, Haiti.
Format: mixed format in person + videoconference, as a function of the COVID19 and security situation.
Scientific program:
1. Solid Earth: seismology, geodesy, geology, geodynamics, landslides, geotechnics, etc.
2. Climate: paleoclimatology, current and future climate, data and models, etc.
3. Hydrometeorology: water as a resource, extreme events, water flow and floods, etc.
4. Coastal areas: sea level, coastal erosion, coral terrasses, mangroves, etc.
5. Geosciences and society: citizen science, socio-anthropology of risk, science communication, etc.
6. Workshop on operationalization of scientific results towards risk reduction in a development context.
Conference:
• Inaugural conference: “Geosciences at the heart of development”.
• Broad audience conference: “Science and citizens” (at the Institut Français).
Other events:
• Official launching ceremony of the CARIBACT International Joint Laboratory.
• Closing cocktail and cultural show.
• Field excursion: 12, November between Pétionville and Kenscoff, conditional on access safety.
Languages: English and French.
Deadline for abstract submission (oral and poster): 10 September 2021.
Registration system and web site are in the process of being setup.
Funding: financial support is available for a limited number of researchers from the Caribbean.
